How to keep your family and your home safe during the holidays
Fri. Dec 18th 2009

With all the hustle and bustle of Christmas, the next few days can be quite hectic.

But, local fire officials are urging you to not let your guard down this time of year, even if it is busy.

Lt. Ron Mesler from Clay Fire Territory reminds everyone to make sure the candles fit the holders well and aren't surrounded by any cloth or wreathes. You should keep them away from children and pets as well in order to avoid them being knocked over.

And as always, remember to blow out the candle before you leave. Never let a candle burn itself out, even in a glass container. "They're pretty to look at, but then when they leave they have other things on their mind and totally forget about it," says Mesler.

Also, check the wrapping paper. While many are flame resistant, some are lead-based and are harmful if swallowed.

Christmas lights can also be dangerous. If a wire is shorted or has to be repaired with tape it's better just to throw it out. Experts also say it’s a good idea to use lights that are for both indoors and outdoors.

Fire officials say this time of year is the busiest when it comes to fires which could have been prevented.
