It caused the building, including Papa John's Pizza, to fill with smoke.
Crews were able to get the fire out with little damage to the building and no injuries, but cold weather and snow were an obstacle.
“We did have a couple of issues tonight with the extreme temperatures. We had a frozen hydrant. We had a frozen connection to the building, so our crews had to work through those. And we want to remind people once again, whether you're commercial or a house, to have the fire hydrants clear, make sure you're digging those out as the snow plows come by,” said Assistance Clay Fire Chief John Vance.
AEP shut down power at the building as crews got the fire under control.
All the businesses inside were closed for the rest of the night.
Officials think a leak in the roof may have caused the electrical panel to short out.
